As senior citizens continue to become
a significantly larger percentage
of our population, it is important
that we, as a community, provide services
that ensure their ability to live
high quality lives. This is the primary
purpose of the Frail and Indigent
Elderly Care Fund.
South Hampton Roads has approximately
140,000 citizens over the age of 65...almost
10% of the population. It is our responsibility
to ensure that these citizens can
enjoy their later years in dignity
and comfort. It's also a well-known
fact that bureaucracy often hinders
delivery of health care to the elderly
and that many elderly people are forced
to give up their homes before they
need to. Often, many elderly live
alone or are forced to live in subsidized
housing.
The United Way of South Hampton Roads
is committed to providing for the
elderly, whether it be through community-based
protective services, home delivered
meals and visitation programs or case
management services. All of these
services play a major role in ensuring
seniors in our community continue
to live independently and with dignity.
The Frail and Indigent Elderly Care
Fund will support the expansion of
existing programs to reach low income
and other elderly populations currently
not being served. The fund will meet
its mission if new initiatives are
reached to enable elderly citizens
to safely enjoy and maintain their
independence.
