For children - a smile, a hug, a friend to hold your hand, that's what it's all about. Safe, healthy, educated children must be a priority for United Way and a responsibility for us as a community. When we make sure that kids receive medical care, have enough to eat and a safe place to grow, we increase their chances of being successful. The United Way of South Hampton Roads' network of agencies and commitment to preventative services are the best investment we can make in our region's future.

The "Success by Six" Child Development Fund will serve at the forefront of supporting these preventative services and progressive programs for our region's children. The United Way of South Hampton Roads, via their local agencies, connect low-income children to pediatric care, help children with disabilities and help parents find appropriate day care. The fund will also make certain that supportive services be available locally for developmentally disabled, high risk and medically fragile children and their families. We want to ensure that high quality programs in which disabled and non-disabled children play and learn together are available through model services.

Some of the top priorities of this fund will include training to child care providers, child care scholarships and much needed special transportation services. An endowed Child Development Fund will support the expansion of these projects and the initiation of other programs that will promote the health and educational outcomes of our young children.
